The life and times of First Presbyterian Church
as we celebrate our 175th Year.
 
1834 - 2009
 
 
As we begin our 175th year serving the heart of West Chester and beyond, we are a congregation of 2,195 individuals. Our youngest member is 14 years old, and our oldest member is 100 years old. One thousand, two-hundred and fifty-seven of our members are female, and 938 members are male. The breakdown of our age groups is as follows:
Ages 25 and Under: 394 Individuals
Ages 26 – 45: 469 Individuals
Ages 46 – 55: 398 Individuals
Ages 56 - 65: 345 Individuals
Ages 66 and Over: 408 Individuals
Number of individuals for whom we do not have birthdates on record: 181.
 
 
 
 
Sunday, February 3, 2008:
  • The 174th Annual Meeting of the congregation and corporation was held. The congregation received the budget of $1,769,618.
  • First Presbyterian Church was chartered on January 15, 1834. We have now begun our 175th year of ministry and mission in Christ’s name.
 
Monday, February 4, 2008:
  • Demolition of the garages on Hemlock Alley to clear the back of the properties of 122 and 126 West Miner Street.
 
Tuesday, February 5, 2008:
  • Regular staff meeting and luncheon where themes for the anniversary year were discussed.
Friday, February 15, 2008:
  • Twenty years ago this month, the Financial Secretary of First Presbyterian Church got her first computer program to track the church finances.  Elizabeth Guman and Peg Cloud entered all members into a church management system by hand, one at a time in order to record contributions and print statements.
Sunday, February 10:
  • The Congregational Life committee held its first ever Fellowship Group leaders’ meeting.  Group leaders attended to share what their groups had planned for the year, learn about event planning at the church, and share ideas with one another. 
 
Wednesday, February 20:
  • To help celebrate our anniversary year, Congregational Life committee hosted a special speaker on West Chester history at WOW.  Ellen Endslow, from the Chester County Historical Society and Chancel Choir member, gave a fascinating presentation on life in West Chester 175 years ago.  More than 40 people attended to learn a little more about those who came before us. 
 
Sunday, February 24:
  • We held our first new member class of 2008.  We had 15 people attend and 11 join.  They were recognized in our 9:00 a.m. service on Sunday, March 2.
  • We began collecting filled, plastic Easter Eggs for our Fourth Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt.
